NextSteps is a series of classes focusing on self-management which aims to help individuals recognize that YOU play the most important role in your recovery. Trauma Support Group is hosted by your Trauma Program Social Workers. Support group is held the 2^nd Wednesday of every month from 6:00 pm Eastern to 7:00 pm. The Trauma Survivors Network Support Group is a safe, supportive place for teens, young adult and adult survivors of physical injuries and their support systems. Please read our group etiquette to ensure all group members have the best possible experience.

UofL Hospital’s Trauma Support Program offers trauma patients an opportunity to talk with a trained peer visitor who can support a newly injured person through a difficult time. Peer visitation aims to reduce isolation and promote the feeling of a sense of belonging and being understood. All of our peer visitors have once walked in your shoes from the initial accident, hospitalization, physical rehabilitation, and returning home to find a sense of normalcy. Peer support visitors understand the concerns of a trauma patient on a very personal level. It is our goal that through peer visitation you will find a community of individuals with whom you can connect.

If you are utilizing your GPS you may type in 550 S Jackson St and it is the garage immediately following on the left. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer parking validation at this time so there is a small fee to park in the garage. Enter the Jackson Street Outpatient Center and take the elevator to the 2^nd floor. When you get off the elevator take a right and then an immediate left. The Trauma Clinic check in window will be just down the hall.

About Roo
Hello, my name is Roo! I’m a spunky boxer lab mix. I’m the first ever in-house facility therapy dog here at UofL Health – UofL Hospital housed under the Trauma Institute. I love giving a helping paw to patients and their families to aid in their healing process both physically and mentally. I hope to be able to give lots of love and support to all the wonderful UofL Hospital patients, staff and first responders as well!

We do our best daily to see everyone that reaches out to us however sometimes Roo does need a break throughout the day. If we don’t get to see you that day, we will do our best to see you the following day.

Art Therapy is an expressive therapy that facilitates the therapeutic process through art making.

Creating art engages parts of the brain where trauma is stored and provides an expressive outlet for patients experiencing a range of presenting problems due to their traumatic experiences. Common issues addressed by Art Therapy include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, grief, guilt, stress, pain management, life changes, physical limitations, boredom, etc.

Art Therapy has been shown to benefit patients mentally and physically through:

• Pain and stress reduction
• Improved quality of life
• Personal insight
• Mental stimulation, reduced anxiety, and depression levels
• Increased communication, relaxation, and confidence, etc.

Art Therapy utilizes a variety of techniques in order to address patient’s presenting problems, and can be personalized for each patient in order to address their specific individual needs.

Art Therapy incorporates a wide range of materials and activities such as:

• Drawing, painting, coloring, clay sculpture, collage, and mask-making
• Guided meditation
• Positive visualization
• Goal setting
• Coping skill development, and many more

Kinesthetic elements are also addressed through Art Therapy, helping patients retrain, develop, maintain, and improve fine motor skills after an injury or stroke.

By giving patients a sense of power and control in an unfamiliar setting, Art Therapy is able to address and reduce many presenting problems patients experience during their hospital stay.
